Family
Readiness Putting the Pieces back together |
DEPLOYMENT and separation are facts of military
life. Saying goodbye is difficult, no matter how long the separation lasts
or how many times loved ones are apart, and the strain doesn’t end when
soldiers return home. While reunion brings joy and excitement, it can also
bring apprehension and anxiety.

| Fisher House
|
Because members of the
military and their families are stationed worldwide and must often travel
great distances for specialized medical care, Fisher House Foundation
donates "comfort homes," built on the grounds of major military
and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a
loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an
unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

Development Veterans Resource Center
|
HUD's Office of Community
Planning and Development, in consultation with national veteran service
organizations, has established a Veteran Resource Center (HUDVET). CPD's
goal is to provide veterans and their family members with information on
HUD's community-based programs and services. It is our hope that, equipped
with this knowledge, armed forces personnel and veterans can become more
involved in the community-based planning and decision-making process as
well as utilization of services and local resources.

Operation Hero Miles |
In September 2003, the Pentagon started giving soldiers
stationed in Iraq two-week leaves in the largest R & R program since
the Vietnam War. Soldiers on R & R or Emergency Leave are flown by
the military to Germany or three airports in the United States,
Baltimore/Washington, (BWI), Dallas/Fort Worth, (DFW), or Atlanta, (ATL
) for free. Existing law in 2003 required soldiers to pay for
their own flights home from these three airports. The Hero Miles
program was started to provide free round trip tickets donated by
the American public to the almost 500 soldiers arriving each day
from Iraq on R & R Leave last fall. This public response
helped persuade Congress to change the law and beginning January 1,
2004, the Pentagon now pays for these domestic flights for the
soldiers.
