In May 2008, First Lady launched the “Ask Before You Eat” food allergy awareness campaign to educate families, schools and the food service industry about the dangers of food
allergies and ways to prevent potentially fatal reactions in children. Although food allergies affect the entire population, children are the most vulnerable victims. Of the 2.1 million
school-aged children in Illinois, an estimated 93,000 are affected by food allergies; that is 1 in 20 students.

"Ask Before You Eat" promotes public awareness through a new brochure, promotional wristbands for children and adults, and web-based advertisements. With support from the Illinois
Departments of Public Health, Illinois Children and Family Services and the Illinois State Board of Education, outreach to schools, communities and the food service industry has already
begun and will continue through this year. Awareness efforts also target childcare centers, community learning centers, park districts, summer camps and after-school programs.
As a parent of a food allergic child, I understand the difficulty of safeguarding children who simply want to have the same food and fun as their friends. Working together, we can protect
our sons and daughter’s health and prevent the tragedies of severe reactions.
