Governor Pat Quinn Vetoes General Assembly’s 50 Percent Budget

Calls on Legislators to Pass Budget that Properly Funds State Services

SPRINGFIELD – July 1, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn fulfilled his pledge to veto the General Assembly’s 50 Percent Budget.

“I will not accept a partial budget that fails to meet the fundamental needs of the people of Illinois,” Governor Quinn said.

The General Assembly's proposed 50 Percent Budget would have created a $9.2 billion dollar funding gap and forced deep and distressing cuts to our vital social service agencies. It would have caused great harm to Illinois' most vulnerable people, including children, the elderly and the disabled.

Governor Quinn has proposed a “Tough Choices” Budget that will improve the state’s fiscal health and put Illinois back on the road to economic recovery.
